About doctoral research: Ph.D.
Title of the research: Studies on the plankton community structure and dynamics in a eutrophic polluted lake at Ranchi.
Ranchi Lake is a predominantly eutrophic lake with high nutrient content as exhibited by the concentration of various parameters. The system receives a daily detergent input through washings of a variety of objects as well as sewage material from the surrounding drainage systems. Generally, there is a chemical rhythm in unpolluted systems in tune with the photosynthesis and respiration of the biota however, in the lake under study, the influx causes a disruption in the chemical rhythm of the lake and it is difficult to assess the changes in the parameters due to the activity of the biota and the entry of pollutants.

We can build a model in which an increase in the nutrient factor favors the growth of the phytoplankton; the N/P ratio favours the development of cyanobacteria. This usually starts in the month of October. With the growth of the phytoplankton and its subsequent death results in an increase in the dissolved organic matter. As the DOM increases, it increases the BOD and COD load of the water body. The decomposition of the organic matter increases the free CO2 concentration and decreases the pH of the system as found in January, June, August and December. The increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide triggers a peak or bloom in January, May and December. As the phytoplankton concentration increase, free CO2 decreases, followed by a decrease in the phytoplankton and the cycle continues. This is followed closely by the zooplankton.
About post – doctoral research: D.Sc.
Title of the research: Modeling changes in Niche structure and studies on its impact on the plankton community in freshwaters
The research is largely based on the changes in the fundamental niche of Mesocyclops species by the action of Brachionus species at Ranchi Lake. The study and research were done at Ranchi Lake, where the fundamental niche of Mesocyclops was identified within the aquatic environmental framework. In the study it was observed that there are three basic parameters that is food, temperature and alkalinity which determines the fundamental niche of Mesocyclops species. It was further observed that Brachionus gives a tough competition to Mesocyclops as it feeds on the same food resource. Moreover, Brachionus is smaller in size as compared to the Mesocyclops, hence, it is not consumed by the Mesocyclops species. An important factor associated with this competition is that, Mesocyclops feeds on Brachionus only when it remains in its larval form. This increases the population of Brachionus and due to these facts, the fundamental niche of the Mesocyclops shrinks to the realized niche.
