Ranchi University

Ranchi University, established on July 12, 1960, as an autonomous institution following its separation from the erstwhile Bihar University (RU Gazette Notification Certificate 1960_framed), commenced its journey with ten postgraduate departments, one constituent college and 20 affiliated colleges. Over the years, the University has expanded its scope, now encompassing 22 postgraduate departments, 19 constituent colleges and 47 affiliated colleges, catering to approximately 160,000 students. Its establishment marked a significant step toward enhancing access to higher education, particularly for the tribal and marginalized populations of the region.

The University has undergone significant structural changes, including its division into four distinct institutions: Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag (1992), Nilambar Pitambar University, Medini Nagar (2009), Kolhan University, Chaibasa (2009) and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi (2019). Despite these bifurcations, its jurisdiction remains extensive, spanning five major districts of Jharkhand and attracting an influx of students from neighbouring states such as West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Positioned in the capital city of Jharkhand, Ranchi University is recognized as a premier institution, striving to maintain its relevance in the evolving landscape of global higher education. To this end, it has introduced various programmes in fields such as yoga, medicine, psychiatry, law, management and engineering, alongside innovative revisions to its traditional curricula.

The introduction of self-financing and vocational courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels exemplifies the University's commitment to enhancing employability. Programmes such as Electronics and Communication, Biotechnology and Diploma in Medicinal Plants at the postgraduate level and BCA, B. Ed., Functional English and Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at the undergraduate level, reflect this focus. These courses, many of which are structured as add-ons, have gained significant popularity due to their employment potential.

Ranchi University's contributions have been recognized through various accolades and accreditations. Three of its colleges have attained the status of 'Colleges with Potential for Excellence' (CPE) under the UGC framework, while several others have received favorable NAAC ratings.
